In God we trust. All others (must) have data.
~ Bernard Fisher, M.D. as cited in The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D.
Dr. Fisher was a surgeon who questioned the Halstedian Theory (i.e. Radical Mastectomy). Radical mastectomy, a procedure deemed reliable based only on Dr. Halsted’s “experience”, was refuted by Dr. Fisher with data from a 10-year study comparing the effects of radical mastectomy vs. simple mastectomy and radiation. Dr. Fisher’s study is the main reason why radical mastectomy is rarely performed as an intervention for breast cancer today. 🙂

programming pagusapan natin. wala ako ng naiintindihan sa post mo. jk.
Posted by cheesecake | June 30, 2014, 5:22 amHAHAHA Hi cheesecake! Pasensya na, pinost ko lang ito para masama sa compilation ko ng mga gusto kong book quotes HAHAHA 🙂
Nako, wag programming! Ako naman ang walang alam diyan! 🙂
Posted by Sachi | June 30, 2014, 8:04 amBaka naman may factor din yung expertise nung doctor in performing these treatments… i want to see dr fisher’s paper. 🙂
Posted by ron | July 9, 2014, 1:20 amHi Ron! Hindi pa kasi uso amg evidence-based practice noong time ni Dr. Halsted, kaya based on experience lang talaga and maraming nagfollow. Noong early parts na nagiging prominent na ang EBP, ‘yung ibang doctors rigid magaccept ng new practices na hindi nila nakasanayan (e.g. Radical mastectomy) 🙂
Ok naman study ni Dr. Fisher pero summary lang niya nabasa ko from the book The Emperor of All Maladies 🙂 not sure where you could access ‘yung study mismo hehe 🙂
